The IMAGE Beauty Awards, now in its ninth year, is Ireland’s longest-running magazine beauty awards, and is the flagship feature of the May issue of IMAGE Magazine, spanning 23 pages and featuring 107 must-have beauty products. The awards are 100 per cent individually scored by a 16-strong expert panel of independent judges, including leading dermatologist Dr Rosemary Coleman; Nicky Hambleton-Jones, formerly of Channel 4’s 10 Years Younger; Ireland AM’s Laura Bermingham; and Elaine Butler-Doolin of TV3’s Celebrity Salon.

The panel has rigorously road-tested over 500 products in four categories – skincare, make-up, bodycare and haircare – testing and scoring each product according to specific criteria, including value for money, product performance, texture, packaging, scent, durability and colour pay-off. From their scores, we calculated an average score from 100 per cent, with each product winning entirely on its own merit, including our brand!

Given I tick all the above, I’m always looking for products to address my conditions. So when I had the opportunity to try new product that claims to improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars, restores the skin moisture level and even help with minimising the appearance of wrinkles, it sounded too good to pass up.  Was it as good as its claims? Let me share my experience with you. 

Busby Pure Tissue Oil

• Core ingredients in this product are grape seed oil, rose hip oil, vitamin E and avocado oil which are high in linoleic acid, omega-3 and omega-6 acids, all known elements that help to promote collagen production for healthy firm skin as well as anti-oxidants that help to fight off free-radicals.
• Despite being an oil, it is amazingly light and absorbs instantly with a pleasant and light fragrance. It is light enough to be used on the body and face if required.
• I used the oil on my body as I don’t have dry skin on my face. Immediate results with use are re-hydrated skin with the skin’s moisture barrier is boosted as the oil creates a fine film to improve the skin’s moisture retention levels.
• Over week, skin was softer, smoother and less prone to dryness. There were no changes in scars or stretch marks. I can’t comment on wrinkle reduction as I don’t have wrinkles in my body, but with any oil, I would see it plumping up the skin area to improve its appearance upon use.
• After six weeks of use, the scar above my knee where I had a big gash last year is a lot fainter. The skin around it is also baby smooth and better in texture. I can see this being very good for healing scars and burns.

As for stretch marks, I only noticed a very slight change after 6 weeks use. My stretch marks are still the pale silvery slithers against my skin (which was the case before I started using the product) but I think the width of the lines have decreased slightly and the skin is more even toned so they are less prominent relative to the rest of the skin. I would expect to see more results if the stretch marks were newer.

This oil has been a pleasant surprise oil for me. It isn’t a miracle product but gives hope that with longer term committed use, I’ll see more fading in my scars and further improvements in my stretch marks.

I tested it on my legs (dehydrated skin) for just over a month, and also used it on my chest area in the hope of reducing some minor stretch marks. The oil comes in a pump pack (which made me happy – I don’t have enough ‘getting ready’ time to put aside for a screw top! The packaging is fully recyclable, too) and is really light – I would say it absorbs just as fast as my regular body moisturiser. While it does leave a nice sheen on your legs, it’s not a slimy one, nor one that soaks into your pants – it soaks into your skin only.

After using the oil for over a month, post-showers, the condition of the skin on my legs is pretty great – taught, smooth to the touch, hydrated. As to the stretch marks, I’ve experienced only a minor reduction in their appearance – but perhaps upping the application to twice a day or more might be more effective.

Something definitely worth noting in regards to the Busby Pure Tissue Oil is that it’s super natural: it’s not tested on animals, contains no animal derivatives, no artificial colourants, no parabens, no petrochemicals and no preservatives. I am a regular user of Bio-Oil, which I have found very effective in reducing a problem blemish area on my chin, as well as tightening up and reducing cellulite on the skin on the back of my thighs. However, for its many great properties, Bio-Oil does contain mineral oil, which is a petro-chemical derivative and is harmful to the skin. The Busby oil, however, contains no petrochemicals or mineral oils, so it’s definitely worth looking into as a substitute for Bio-Oil if you’re a fan of the latter.

Vitamin E is crucial for good skin health, it’s an antioxidant that neutralises free radicals and prevents cell damage occurring.
